I am still living at a hotel, and although it is very nice it is not very homely, just like most hotels. I am in the quest to find an apartment, and yesterday I went out on this home hunting.
The standard of accommodation is very high. For the same money I was paying in Cambridge for a room in a shared house with wonderful views to Marshall’s airport, I can get here a brand new 1 BR apartment, fully furnished, with pool, gym and sauna in the very centre of Bangkok. Of course I won’t have the opportunity to share with the lovely Binks, so that is a definite minus, but we always knew that the transition over here would be a bit hard…
Something that shocked me when I first started looking for apartments is the size of the kitchen, they are absolutely tiny, in some cases almost nonexistent. It suits me just fine as I am rubbish at cooking and I won’t get close to a cooker if I can help it, but this feels just ridiculous. Most apartments don’t even have a separate kitchen area, they just have a stove in a corner and that’s it. Apparently nobody cooks at home, nor locals nor the farangs (i.e. us, the foreigners) it is expensive and not very convenient. Especially when you have restaurants all over the place and you can have a meal fit for a king for less than 4 GBP. So I am set for a live down at a restaurant or other, I don’t think you will hear me complaining about that!
